Bowls

My bowls are finished with oils that are food-safe when completely cured. Bowls that retain the bark or unturned edges are called "Natural Edge" bowls. These are more difficult to turn than "cut rim" bowls and can have wonderful character if the bark is successfully preserved.

All the wood used for my bowls comes from trees that were already dead and would otherwise have naturally returned to the earth. Some of the wood shows distinctive patterns called "spalting" that occur as molds and fungus consume the dead wood. When this decay is stopped in a timely fashion, it gives the wood beautiful color and lines not found in "healthy" wood.

For bowls, I use woods native to or naturally occuring in the North Texas area such as Ash, Walnut, Elm, Pecan, Cedar, Chinaberry, Hackberry, Sugarberry, and Oak.

This bowl had a bit of rot on the rim. I removed the rot, drilled through the wall and inserted thin brass rods to visually fill the void. The result was a warm, primitive look.

Bowl / Brass Inlay
6.5 X 6.5 X 2.5
Walnut, Brass
$145.00

This piece was rough turned then allowed to dry for a few months. Before finish turning, I drilled and inserted birch dowels through the bark inclusion that runs through the majority of the bowl to prevent it from flying apart during the finishing process.

Pear, Birch

This piece was turned from a large piece of hackberry that spalted as it dried. This is the first piece on which I carved the outside surface rather than traditional sanding.

The carving represents the petals of a blossom and is up to 1" deep from the original surface. It is also one of the few pieces I have named.

This bowl uses a technique I developed called "Dowel Pre-Inlay". I drilled the rough-turned bowl and inserted dowel rods made of wood and aluminum to strengthen the bowl for the finish turning process. The technique produced a great repair that is also aesthetically pleasing. A video of this bowl being made is available at: www.youtube.com/chas6444.
